April 2024

We are delighted to announce that we have recently opened a new Changing Places toilet facility in the Centre to make it easier for those with disabilities find comfort when visiting the Centre allowing them to stay longer and enjoy what Kingfisher (and the town) has to offer without worrying about the quality of toilet provision.

The facility allows people who are unable to transfer independently or have no sitting balance and need additional facilities such as a ceiling track hoist to transfer between their wheelchair, the WC and an adult-sized changing bench. Many people with profound and multiple learning disabilities are doubly incontinent and have total dependency on assistants / carers. They need access to facilities where they can be changed with dignity and where assistants / carers are able to use a hoist and other equipment to provide appropriate and safe care.

The range of people who might use CP toilets include:

  • people with profound and multiple learning disabilities
  • people with conditions that may affect their movement, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease
  • people with head injuries or severe spinal injuries
  • people living with the effects of a stroke
  • older people who require assistance

Β

The facility features a centrally placed toilet, a height adjustable changing bench and washbasin, a ceiling tracking hoist system, shower, privacy screen and a wide paper roll dispenser,Β  large waste bin for disposable pads, and all with easy access and manoeuvrability on a non-slip floor. Guest must bring their own sling for the hoist. Access is only gained through pressing a buzzer which connects to our Control Room in order to ensure that guests who have a genuine need for this specialist facility make use of it. Changing Places toilets are in addition to standard accessible toilets as Changing Places toilets are for users with complex care needs who need carer support whereas the standard accessible toilet next door is for users who can use the toilet independently. The facility is open between 7am and 8.30pm every day except Christmas Day.

The Changing Places toilet is located in Evesham Walk within the main toilet block which also features the refurbished Accessible Toilet as well as a Baby Change facility. For more information on Changing Places, visit https://www.changing-places.org/
