Our History

February 13th 1973 marked the beginning of the Kingfisher Shopping Centre with the opening of 51 shop units, offices, a restaurant, and two key stores, Boots and Sainsbury's.

By 12th September 1975 phase two of the development was complete. The centre totalled 144,000 sq ft and boasted an additional 32 shop units, offices, an Ecumenical Centre, an exhibition space named Worcester Square, and two more principal stores, FW Woolworth and WHSmith.

The Worcester Square exhibition space was the heart of the centre. The space featured palm trees which were loved by locals and lead to the Kingfisher tagline 'shopping under the palms'. They were central to the character of the centre and were a popular talking point throughout Redditch and its surrounding areas. Worcester Square became a valued space for hosting carol concerts, performances by orchestras, and many more community groups.
